Ron Paul Tops McCain in Cash on Hand

ABC News' George Stephanopoulos Reports: Though often regarded as a longshot candidate for president, Republican Ron Paul tells ABC News that he has an impressive $2.4 million in cash on hand after raising an equal amount during the second quarter, putting him ahead of one-time Republican frontrunner John McCain, who reported this week he has only $2 million in the bank.
In an exclusive interview taped Friday and airing Sunday on "This Week," Paul said his campaign is on a better trajectory than McCain's.
"I think some of the candidates are on the down-slope, and we're on the up-slope," said Paul.
Paul's cash on hand puts him in third place in the Republican field in that important metric, although he is well behind leader Rudy Giuliani, who has $18 million in the bank, and Mitt Romney, with $12 million.
Paul, who polls show with support in the low single digits, said his surprisingly strong fundraising is the best measure of his support.
"I think people have underestimated the number of people in this country who are interested in a freedom message," says the Republican congressman from Texas, who has strong libertarian leanings.

As I pull out my debit card AGAIN!!!! Thanks so much to ABC and GS for sharing this wonderful news. It has moved me to tears. I pray for all of the moms like me who cannot bear to see their children hearded like cattle off to kill and die...we can stop this RIGHT NOW!!! In five years my twelve year old son very likely could be shipped off, and all of the love, good values, education, and kind heartedness I have instilled in him would very likely be lost as he is trained to be a killer and put it abject misery and death. Again...we have the power to end this RIGHT NOW!!! Like Lena Horne told Diana Ross in The WIZ... The best news I've heard in my entire life to this point is that Ron Paul is now in the Top Tier. Regardless of any spin, Ron Paul is in the TOP TIER. THANK YOU GOD, THANK YOU!!!
This is great news! I do want to find out how many "donors" donated this quarter...because I know I did, but it was only very small amounts, which means I will continue to donate. Ron Paul said that if his campaign can raise between $5-10 million dollars, they will be able to run a successful campaign...plus, this $2.4 million doesn't take into account all the time and effort by Dr. Paul's supporters...if it did, it would surpass all the other candidates I bet.
